What is your name (the one you write under) and what genre/s do you write?
Renee Jean - drama, suspense, humor and Mackenzie Knight - historical paranormal, thriller
How long have you been writing for and how did you begin your writing journey?
I published first in 2014 but have been writing as long as I can remember. I made up stories for the kids at my daycare to act out when I was only six and have been sharing stories and poems ever since.
Which of your characters is your favorite to write and why?
My current favorite is Persyphone Syntel from my Syn series. She is strong, dignified, and is the first character I wrote purely for fun.
Which of your books or series was your favorite to create and write?
My Sharing Strength will always mean the most to me but the Syn series is by far the most fun to write. The research has been almost as much fun as the writing and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here.
What do you do when a new idea pops up and you're still in the middle of your current book, do you chase that squirrel or complete your current project first?
I never do anything with a new plot bunny. I let it sit for at least three months and see if it sticks around / develops further, or if it simply vanishes. If it is still around I allow it to grow in the background while I finish my current project. The hardest part is finishing a book and deciding what to work on next.
What do you enjoy the most about writing in your genre/s?
I am a multi-genre author so the variety has to be the best part. I love learning more about them, reading other books in each, and getting to stretch my abilities.
Tell readers something unique or fun about yourself or your writing process.
My pen name Renee Jean has book that are all connected to me personally.
Is there something readers can take away from your writing or characters?
I hope that with the Renee Jean books readers feel a connection with the characters. With Mackenzie Knight I hope they get lost in the story.
What do you know now about writing/publishing that you wish you knew when you published your first book?
I think I actually appreciate all that I didn't know. A big part of my continued love of writing is the learning. I savor each and every moment I have been able to grow as an author.
What advice would you give to those thinking about writing their first book?
Don't wait for the time to be right or inspiration to strike. Make the time now and learn to channel your muse so you can get the first draft done. After that you can polish and fix it to be pretty but getting that first run through done is most important.
